Every drain clogs for a different reason

Kitchen sinks

Kitchen clogs are almost always grease. Cooking fat goes down warm and liquid, then cools and sticks to the pipe wall. Food scraps and coffee grounds catch on it, and the opening gets smaller every week. Running the garbage disposal doesn't help much; it just makes smaller pieces for the grease to grab. In Yuma homes, mineral scale from the hard water gives that grease an even rougher surface to grip.

Bathroom sinks, showers and tubs

Here the culprit is hair, held together by soap scum and toothpaste. It usually builds up within the first foot or two of the drain, so a technician can often reach it at the stopper or through the overflow. If the shower drains slowly no matter how many times you clean the cover, the clog is further down.

Toilets

Too much paper, "flushable" wipes (which don't break down the way toilet paper does), cotton swabs, feminine products and small toys are the usual causes. A toilet auger clears most of these without pulling the toilet. If a toilet keeps clogging even with normal use, or the tub gurgles when you flush, the real problem may be in the main sewer line.

Laundry and floor drains

Lint, sand and detergent residue build up in laundry standpipes, especially in homes where work clothes come back from the fields or job sites. Floor drains in garages, utility rooms and commercial kitchens collect dirt and debris until they stop draining during a cleanup or a storm.

How a clogged drain gets cleared

  1. Find the clog. The technician runs water and checks the other fixtures to see whether the clog is local or further down the line.
  2. Clear it. For most sink, tub and toilet clogs, that's a hand or machine drain auger fed through the drain or a cleanout.
  3. Test the flow. They run water to make sure it drains at full speed, not just a trickle.
  4. Talk about next steps. If the clog was grease or scale and is likely to come back, they may suggest hydro jetting or a camera inspection. You decide.

Skip the chemical drain cleaner. It rarely clears grease or hair fully, it can damage older pipes, and it's dangerous for the technician if it's still sitting in the line. If you've already used one, let them know before they start.

Keep drains clear between visits

  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them, and put cooled fat in the trash.
  • Use a hair catcher in every shower and tub.
  • Flush only toilet paper. "Flushable" wipes go in the trash.
  • Run hot water for 30 seconds after using the kitchen sink.
  • If your drains keep slowing down, ask about scale. Yuma's hard water is part of the story.

Is it more than one drain?
